Neighbourhood Renewal

Working proactively with the community to bring about positive and long-term change in the Andersonstown area.

Background

What is Neighbourhood Renewal?

In June 2003, the Government launched Neighbourhood Renewal - People and Place. Neighbourhoods in the most deprived 10% of wards across Northern Ireland were identified using the Noble Multiple Deprivation Measure. Following extensive consultation, this resulted in a total of 36 areas, and a population of approximately 280,000 (one person in 6 in Northern Ireland), being targeted for intervention.

The Andersonstown area was identified as one of these areas. The boundary of the area designated the Neighbourhood Renewal zone is that area inside the perimeter of the Shaw's Road, Glen Road and Andersonstown Road. It also takes in some areas on the other side of the Glen Road and Shaw's Road.

Neighbourhood Renewal Partnerships

Neighbourhood Partnerships have been established in each Neighbourhood Renewal Area as a vehicle for local planning and implementation. Each Neighbourhood Partnership should include representatives of key political, statutory, voluntary, community and private sector stakeholders. Together, they have developed long term visions and action plans designed to improve the quality of life for those living in the area.

Neighbourhood Renewal Areas Include:

  • push_pin15 in Belfast
  • push_pin6 in the North West (including 4 in Derry/Londonderry)
  • push_pin15 in other towns and cities across Northern Ireland

Vision

Our Hopes & Plans for the Future

We hope that Neighbourhood Renewal will continue to proactively work for the community in the Andersonstown area to keep bringing about positive change. In order to do this, we will be trying to put our efforts into rejuvenating the Andersonstown Neighbourhood Partnership's style of working in the area so that it will be more efficient and effective at dealing with tasks.

We feel that this will be important in helping us deal with major infrastructure projects and key issues such as health which will come to the fore in the area.

We work with a wide range of partners in the Andersonstown area in order to achieve this with the Andersonstown Neighborhood Partnership. Each member of the Partnership will have a keen interest in one or more of our thematic areas. We will work with these partners in order to bring about positive change for the Andersonstown area wherever we can.
